Maintaining A Synthetic Grass Tennis Court

Tennis courts made from grass are slowly disappearing from the landscape due to the high cost of maintenance both in money and time. Consequently a lot of the grass tennis courts have been replaced by surfaces that are a lot less labor intensive.

One of these newer types of tennis court surfaces is a grass synthetic product containing a silicon-based infill. This kind of tennis court surface is known as a sand filled artificial grass surface.

The idea behind using a sand filled artificial grass surface is to provide a hard-wearing suface with a consistent bounce that requires les maintenance than the traditional sufraces such as clay and grass. There is still some maintenance required. In fact, there are some important tasks that must be performed to ensure your artificial grass tennis court is at its best.

Before we even mention the maintenance that will be needed from a professional service, there is an important regular task that should be performed. Products such as a Cleansweep can be used on a daily to weekly basis to enable you to quickly remove surface debris. Removing debris is important because when organic matter is lodged into the pile of the artificial grass it increases the chance of algae and moss taking hold. Using a product like a Cleansweep will make the job of removing debris from the court a relatively quick one say, 10 minutes, and the condition of the court will be maintained for longer.

The nature of the sand fill plus the constant traffic and the effects of the weather means that it will become compacted. As the sand becomes more compacted, the job that it is there for, namely to ensure the grass tufts sit upright, is not being done. When the sand compaction gets too bad the footing will become more unpredictable.

Around once a year you should call in the professionals to come and freshen up your sand filled artificial grass surface. Some of the maintenance steps that may be required include:

  • decompacting the sand infill by power brushing
  • a high-pressure wash with water
  • lifting and conditioning the grass fibers
  • sand grooming
  • sand level adjustment
  • replacing sand infill
  • moss and algae spraying
  • replacement of synthetic grass if parts have worn or torn
  • repairing the seams
  • repainting lines.

One of the best measures of maintaining your synthetic grass surface is to practice preventative maintenance. What this means is to try to prevent people from entering the court with overly dirty shoes. Provide a mat at the gate, have shoe brushes available, or a gravel tray filled with coarse gravel. The cleaner the shoes that walk on the court, the less debris gets trapped in the grass weave.

While a tennis court made from synthetic grass requires less maintenance, to keep the surface looking good, playing well and providing reliable footing, a regular spruce up is a must. As with all products, proper care and attention will prolong the life of your court.
