Advice On Choosing A Lawn Mower
It’s time to get a new lawn mower so you head to the store and rapidly get overwhelmed by all the choices available. However if you know what you are looking for before you get there, the selection process becomes a great deal easier.
There are 3 things you need to look at first. Know the slope and size of your yard. Figure out what options you will require. And decide on the power and quality of the engine.
Settling on a riding or walk behind mower should be your first task. If your lawn is less than three-quarters of an acre, the more popular walk behind mower would be a wise choice. You won’t need too many more features if your lawn is little and flat. If your yard is over 1/2 an acre or is filled with hills and challenging terrain, then a self propelled walking mower is a better alternative. These mowers run on their own without any pushing needed from you. Your job is to be a guide, steering the lawn mower around turns.
Matching your lawn to the mower deck and engine strength is essential. The amount of grass cut by one pass is determined by the mower deck. A smaller deck means a greater number of passes over the grounds to complete the chore. Combine a big deck with a powerful motor, and mowing is easy. However do not toss money away by going overboard. Matching the mower with the yard will give you the best results at the greatest price.
You also need to consider the size of the back wheels. If your yard has a lot of hills or is extremely rough, you might want to get bigger wheels for simpler mowing. Otherwise, regular wheels will be OK.
Riding lawn mowers are better if your yard is larger than 3/4 of an acre. Once again you’ll have plenty of alternatives with engine sizes and mower deck sizes. The same rules apply here. If you own several acres, a larger engine and wider deck is worth it. There’s no need to go larger and throw away money if you have under an acre.
Riding lawn mowers also have different ways to steer and operate. Go with the one that is most comfortable for you, whether it is steering sticks or a steering wheel. A zero turn lawn mower will enable you to turn easily around landscape features like trees and shrubs. If your lawn does not have several of these, then this is an additional feature that you probably don’t require.
Lastly, decide if you require a mulching lawn mower. These lawn mowers have special blades that will continually hack up the blades of grass into small fragments. The fragments act as a natural plant food after they return to the ground and break down. Bagging is your other choice. The bag catches the clippings allowing you to throw them away.
Of course there are dozens of other options including electric lawn mowers, cordless or corded, solar powered and even automatic mowers that do all the work for you. But understanding what you require before looking for lawn mowers for sale will make the search a much simpler task.
