Are men really likely to have more success with women because of their deodorant?
You must have seen those TV adverts for Lynx men’s deodorant. You know the ones where the normal or geeky bloke sprays himself with the stuff and women start throwing themselves at him uncontrollably. It’s like those old adverts for aftershave from the seventies which gave much the same message – use this product and you are guaranteed to get laid that day.
I can’t help wondering if there are any men who actually believe that. I suppose there must be as Lynx is the most popular men’s deodorant despite the fact that it really doesn’t smell very nice at all. To me it’s the smell of teenage boys years ago at school, the ones who were so desperate not to smell of B.O but never bothered showering so would coat themselves in the stuff so you couldn’t go anywhere in the building without that smell invading your nostrils. Definitely not something I’d want to be reminded of by a potential boyfriend.
The weird thing is that so many men actually seem to think that using Lynx or other similar products will give them more luck with women. The truth is I don’t think Iknow any women who would choose a man simply for the way he smells. No, you don’t want your man to stink but there are other things that contribute a lot more to first impressions than his choice of deodorant.
Think about all those lifestyle magazines you can buy. Unless they’re endorsing a particular fragrance when do you ever see a story about what celebrities smell like? You don’t, because no one cares. What’s much more attractive is a man who takes care of himself and looks good as a result.
Aside from products like Lynx, many men are still afraid of the stigma that goes with using male grooming products in case it seems like they’re not being manly enough. The truth is that taking care of your skin and body will make you look your best all the time, and everyone knows when you look good you feel good too. Looking after your skin and hair by regularly using products like those from American Crew and Tend Skin will mean you will always look great. And if you still like the idea of smelling nice too then Molton Brown do a good selection of nice fragrances for men without that horrible choking effect of aerosol deodorants like Lynx.
